Correction

Correcting old permanent makeup: which correctors to use

Many clients come in with old permanent makeup that has changed colour. Brows may have turned grey-blue or orange, and lips may have gone too cool or patchy. Correctors (also called modifiers) help you neutralise the unwanted tone before or during a new procedure.

The basics: complementary colours

Correction works on colour theory. Opposite colours on the colour wheel neutralise each other:

  • Grey, blue or ashy brows: neutralise with an orange or yellow-orange corrector.
  • Red, pink or salmon tones: neutralise with a green or olive corrector.
  • Too orange or warm: neutralise with a cooler, blue-based or ash tone, used very carefully.
  • Purple tones: neutralise with a yellow corrector.

How to approach a correction

  1. Assess first. Look at the colour in daylight, how dense the old pigment is and the client's skin. Very dark, dense or badly shaped work often can't simply be covered.
  2. Correct, then colour. Many artists apply a corrector session first, let it heal, and then apply the new shade. Others mix a small amount of modifier into the new pigment. Follow the manufacturer's mixing guidance.
  3. Work in steps. Allow full healing (usually 4–6 weeks) between sessions and photograph each stage.

When removal is the better choice

If the old work is too dark, too dense or the wrong shape, lightening it first with a dedicated PMU remover, or referring the client to a laser specialist, usually gives a much cleaner result than layering more pigment on top.
